Water Wisteria

The Water Wisteria (Hygrophila difformis) is one of the most popular, versatile, and fast-growing stem plants in the aquarium hobby, famous for its delicate, lace-like, deeply lobed green leaves.

Characteristics

• Appearance: Features bright green, highly feathered, lace-like leaves that vary dramatically depending on light and water conditions (a phenomenon known as heterophylla).

• Size: Rapidly grows 12–20+ inches (30–50+ cm) tall and wide, making it an excellent background plant or fast-growing background cover.

• Nutrient Sponge: Extremely fast growth rate makes it a powerful natural filter that rapidly absorbs nitrates, phosphates, and ammonium, effectively suppressing nuisance algae.

• Care Level: Very easy and hardy—ideal for beginners and new aquarium setups to establish biological stability.

• Ideal Range: 70°F – 82°F (21°C – 28°C)

• Note: Adapts easily across tropical and subtropical water parameters.

Lighting

• Requirement: Moderate to High

• Note: Under strong light, leaves become deeply dissected and lacy. Under lower light, leaves grow broader and less lobed with larger gaps between nodes.

Propagation

• Method: Stem Cuttings or Leaf Propagation

• How it works:

  1. Trim any portion of a healthy stem and push the cut end directly into the substrate to root.

  2. Alternatively, even a single detached leaf floating in the tank will frequently sprout roots and a brand-new miniature stem from its base.
