How to Read Aquarium Test Strips & Kits

You look at your aquarium and the water is crystal clear. The fish are swimming, the plants or corals look fine, and everything seems perfect. But underneath the surface, an invisible chemical story is unfolding.
In the aquarium hobby, relying on a visual check is like managing your finances by looking at your wallet from across the room it doesn't give you the whole picture. Testing your water is the only definitive way to know if your aquatic ecosystem is thriving or in jeopardy.
If you’ve ever stared at a color chart or a digital readout wondering what those numbers actually mean for your tank, this guide is for you. Let’s break down the "Big Five" water parameters: Ammonia, Nitrites, Nitrates, pH, and Salinity into clear, actionable terms.
#1. Ammonia
What It Is:
Ammonia is the primary waste product in an aquarium. It enters your tank through fish waste, uneaten fish food, and decaying plant matter. Think of it as the raw sewage of your aquarium ecosystem.
What the Numbers Mean
- 0 ppm (Parts Per Million): Perfect. This is the only acceptable number for an established tank.
- 0.25 – 0.50 ppm: Alert stage. Your biological filter is struggling, or your tank is still cycling.
- 1.0 ppm and above: Danger zone. At this level, ammonia causes severe stress, chemical burns to gills, and immediate lethality to fish and invertebrates.
The Fix:
If you see any reading above 0 ppm in an established tank, perform an immediate 25% to 50% water change. Use a high-quality water conditioner that temporarily detoxifies ammonia (converting toxic NH₃ to less harmful NH₄⁺) to protect your livestock while your beneficial bacteria catch up.
#2. Nitrites (NO₂⁻)
What It Is:
As the beneficial bacteria in your biological filter consume ammonia, they convert it into Nitrites. While it’s a sign that your nitrogen cycle is working, nitrites are just as toxic as ammonia.
What the Numbers Mean:
- 0 ppm: Ideal.
- 0.25 – 0.50 ppm: Toxic. This level suffocates fish by entering their bloodstream and preventing their red blood cells from carrying oxygen (often called "brown blood disease").
- 1.0 ppm and above: Lethal. Immediate intervention is required.
The Fix:
Like ammonia, the fastest cure for a nitrite spike is a partial water change. You can also add a dose of live nitrifying bacteria directly to your tank or filter media to accelerate the conversion process.
#3. Nitrates (NO₃⁻)
What It Is:
The final byproduct of the standard nitrogen cycle. Beneficial bacteria turn nitrites into nitrates. Nitrates are significantly less toxic than ammonia or nitrites, but they act as a slow poison if allowed to build up over time. They are also the primary food source for nuisance algae.
What the Numbers Mean:
- 0 to 20 ppm: Excellent for freshwater tanks and most saltwater setups.
- 20 to 40 ppm: Acceptable for hardy freshwater fish, but getting high for delicate fish, shrimp, or corals.
- 40+ ppm: High risk. Long-term exposure stunts growth, weakens fish immune systems, and triggers massive algae blooms.
The Fix:
Because standard aquarium filtration doesn't easily remove nitrates, the most effective solution is regular maintenance. Weekly or bi-weekly water changes physically remove nitrates and replace them with clean, fresh water. Live plants (in freshwater) and macroalgae (in saltwater) also consume nitrates naturally as fertilizer.
#4. pH (Potential of Hydrogen)
What It Is:
pH measures how acidic or alkaline (basic) your aquarium water is on a scale of 0 to 14, with 7.0 being perfectly neutral.
What the Numbers Mean:
Unlike the nitrogen cycle parameters, there isn't one "perfect" number for pH. It depends entirely on what you are keeping:

6.5 – 7.5: Ideal for most community freshwater fish and live plants.

7.8 – 8.4: Standard for African Cichlids and marine/reef environments.
Crucial Tip: Stability matters vastly more than hitting a specific textbook number. A steady pH of 6.8 is much healthier for a fish than a pH that swings wildly between 7.0 and 7.6 every few days.
The Fix:
If your pH is drifting, avoid using chemical "pH Up" or "pH Down" fixes, which often cause dangerous, rapid bounces. Instead, use natural buffers. Crushed coral or limestone will safely raise a low pH, while driftwood or peat moss will gently lower a high pH.
#5. Salinity & Specific Gravity
What It Is:
Salinity measures the concentration of dissolved salts in your water. This parameter is exclusive to brackish and saltwater/reef aquariums. It is typically measured using a hydrometer or a refractometer.
What the Numbers Mean:
- 1.000: Pure freshwater.
- 1.023 – 1.025: Ideal for a standard marine fish-only setup.
- 1.025 – 1.026: Perfect for a thriving coral reef tank.
The Fix:
Water evaporates from an aquarium, but salt does not. As water evaporates, your salinity levels will rise. To counteract this, always top off your tank with pure, unsalted reverse osmosis (RO) or distilled water, never saltwater. If you need to lower salinity during a water change, mix your new saltwater batch to a slightly lower concentration.
